The Gospel of John
THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE!
John 1:1-5
Hebrews 12:1-2 – let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
That’s the goal as we begin studying the Gospel of John.
Our goal is to Turn Our Eyes to Jesus.
To fix our thoughts and our hearts on Him.
• To know Him
• To trust in Him
• To have life in His name.
1. Jesus is Eternal (v. 1)
2. Jesus is Relational (v. 1b)
3. Jesus is God (v. 1c)
4. Jesus Is Creator (v. 3)
5. Jesus Is Life (v. 4)
6. Jesus is Light (v. 5)
1. Jesus is Eternal (v. 1)
There never was a time that Jesus didn’t exist. He is the source, the origin, the Prototokos - the preeminent One in all of creation.
Watch the first 3-1/2 minutes of this sermon:
The word for Word is the word logos, which had great meaning to both Jews and Greeks.
Jesus is the incarnation of divine power and revelation
2. Jesus is Relational (v. 1b)
Jesus was also with God
This is deep, intimate fellowship. An eternal, ongoing, joyous intimacy that exists between the Father and Son.
3. Jesus is God (v. 1c)
And the Word was God
This opening verse is one of the most powerful, compact statements in all of Scripture.
Always existing
Always in perfect intimate communal fellowship with God
Always God
4. Jesus Is Creator (v. 3)
Write the number 10 and add 27 zeros.
That’s an “octillion,” - the number of stars that exist according to Einstein. Every single one of them was created by Jesus.
If that doesn’t lead you to a position of awe at the beauty, majesty, and awesomeness of Jesus, nothing will.
Jesus as the Creator of all things comes in as foundational theology.
5. Jesus Is Life (v. 4)
I don’t want to say that these build in importance or significance, but they do paint an increasingly awesome picture of Christ.
The for life is ZOE. - the essence of what life is.
John 10:10 – I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
If you deny any aspect of Jesus as John describes Him, you are not a Christian.
Your Jesus is a different Jesus.
The Jesus of Jehovah’s Witnesses is a different Jesus. The Jesus of the Mormons is a different Jesus.
The Fundamental truth of the eternal self-existence of Jesus is the foundation of our faith.
6. Jesus is Light (v. 5)
Light and life are the same, and they stand in contrast to the darkness of the lies of the enemy and the sin that saturates our world.
Light is truth <––> Darkness is falsehood
Light is holiness <––> Darkness is sin
Jesus is the LIGHT that shines into the darkness of the world.
Darkness is destroyed by light
You can’t turn up the darkness, it’s the absence of light.
The amazing truth of this is that the forces of
darkness literally cannot overcome The Light that shines in the darkness.
We need to always be continually amazed at the glorious truth that Jesus died so that we can know Him. He saved us.
I stand amazed in the presence
of Jesus, the Nazarene,
And wonder how He could love me,
a sinner, condemned, unclean.
How marvelous, how wonderful!
And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous, how wonderful
Is my Savior’s love for me!
May you be more and more amazed by our glorious Savior every day!
Grace & Peace
